PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
This application, using the more
compact crane in the excavation,
was unique being that APC was
working inside of an excavation
built of dredged material with
a very high water content
without the use of a traditional
sheet pile bulkhead wall.
completed safely and ahead of schedule.
Further, APC performed this project with
no safety issues, no disruption to marine
traffic and zero environmental impacts.
All sheets and piles were unloaded, lifted
and driven precisely while maintaining
very stringent clearance requirements and
pile tolerances.
Innovative plan
APC excavated existing, dredged materials
to build a berm to protect the excavation
from the navigable waterway. The excavation
elevation was lower than the adjacent
water level in Slip C’s flotation canal off of
Bayou Lafourche. This berm allowed APC’s
pile crews to begin installation of the piles.
Due to the significant batter on the concrete
piles, APC utilized a two-crane driving
technique that increases production. This
two-crane driving technique consists of a
larger driving crane that has the hammer
and leads and a smaller crane for loading
the leads. The two-crane train technique
was located outside of the excavation. Once
concrete piles were ahead, APC’s sheet pile
crew matted the compact crane into the
70-foot wide excavation and began sheet
pile and mooring pile installation.
APC utilized a more compact crane,
allowing its crews to be in the excavation
and closer to the berm to install the
sheet piles and mooring piles with the same
crane concurrently. This application, using
the more compact crane in the excavation,
was unique being that APC was working
inside of an excavation built of dredged
material with a very high water content
without the use of a traditional sheet pile
bulkhead wall. This solution allowed APC’s
team to meet the schedule due to the sheet
pile coating lead time.
Creative solutions to problems
The sheet pile coating delivery date created
a major challenge for this project. APC
