When there was a clear harbor bottom to drive into, the sheet piling
drove very well; however, obstructions would at times cause
the crew to lose two to three days, advancing just five or ten feet.
Throughout the construction project, we had to maintain temporary
mooring locations and fendering systems for the ferries
and maintain access to the end of the pier at all times for the ferry
crew to secure the vessels in their berth. This was a substantial
task with a series of gangways necessary to get ferry personnel to
their mooring stations. During certain wind conditions, the ferries
could only use a berth on the lee side of the pier which occasionally
necessitated our crews to work on the opposite side of the pier.
The vessels also needed consistent access to fresh water, sewer
