Replacement of Port Jefferson
 Ferry Terminal Pier
Chesterfield Associates, Inc. served as the prime contractor for this
 challenging job
 Submitted by Chesterfield Associates, Inc.
The Port Jefferson Ferry Terminal Pier (PJFTP) project
had many unique features and challenges for
Chesterfield Associates. It took place in a busy seaside
village with businesses, hotels and residences within close proximity
to the project. It also involved the installation of steel sheet piling
(SSP) that was up to 90 feet in length. The project also needed
to be constructed while maintaining both ferry bert hs, including
temporary mooring devices and access f or the ferry crews to
secure the vessels in their berths at all times. The ferries run 10
trips per day on average, seven days a week. They service up to
500,000 vehicles and over 1 million passengers annually. This was a
 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
challenging task that was closely coordinated on a daily basis with
 ferry personnel.
Most of the SSP had to be placed in the same line as the existing
SSP so that the ferries would still align with their existing load/
unloading ramps for vehicles and passengers. This meant that
30-year-old, deteriorated SSP had to be extracted before the new
SSP could be installed. In some areas, the existing SSP was paper
 thin and difficult to extract.
We received permission from the Village of Port Jefferson
to perform work from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and
7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The expanded work hours
Progressing south along the west side of the pier. Ninety-foot SSP in the foreground.
