works on both commercial and public works projects and installs
H-beams, pipe piles, sheet piles and pre-stressed concrete piles
the most.
Two major projects
Two large projects that the company has been involved in are the
California High Speed Rail and the District at South Bay.
The California High Speed Rail is a publicly funded high-speed
rail system under construction that is projected to connect the
Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center in Anaheim
and Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles with the Salesforce
Transit Center in San Francisco via the Central Valley.
It is eventually planned to provide a one-seat ride between
Union Station and San Francisco in two hours and 40 minutes – a
distance of 380 miles. Future extensions are planned to connect to
stations in San Diego County via the Inland Empire, as well as to
Sacramento.
“For the California High Speed Rail project, we installed 14-inch
square concrete piles for numerous bridges and load test programs,”
said Bird. “We have had the opportunity to be involved in
one of California’s largest infrastructures projects ever built. This is
the type of project that we will be proud one day to tell our grandkids
about. Although one would think that working on this project
in the rural farmlands of California would be a refreshing change
from the urban areas of Los Angeles, this project has its own set
of challenges. Typically, a biologist, paleontologist and American
Indian observer are all on site to ensure that pile driving work is
not ‘negatively’ impacting the natural environment.”
In addition, he says there are multiple quality control inspectors
along with geotechnical inspectors onsite.
“It is not uncommon for there to be twice as many inspectors
on the site than our crew actually working at the site,” he said.
“Although we have an extensive ‘audience’ when we are working,
we welcome the challenge. This gives us the opportunity to shine as
a leader in our industry and show to all that we are able to perform
pile driving operations safely and efficiently.”
The District at South Bay is a 157-acre brownfield redevelopment
project that is being constructed on a former landfill site
commonly known as the Cal Compact Landfill in Los Angeles
County. Subject to the oversight of the California Department of
Toxic Substances Control, this mixed-use development is entitled
for and may include 1.83 million square feet of commercial, retail
