EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
 PDCA is Doing the Hard
 Thing… Because it’s
 the Right Thing to Do
By Frank Peters, Executive Director, PDCA
We have all heard the expression, “When the going
gets tough, the tough get going!” The year 2019,
at the very least, has been a challenging year for
PDCA. It is probably better stated that this year has been hard both
internally from an organization viewpoint, and externally from
a member standpoint. However, just because something is hard
doesn’t mean it’s bad. In most life experiences, the hard things
generally turn out to be the good things that have to be worked
through to get to the benefit. That is our view of what is going on in
PDCA right now. The organization is working through some hard
things to get to the benefit. PDCA is doing the hard thing because
it’s the right thing to do!
The year started with PDCA hiring a new executive director.
This might seem like a straightforward step until you consider that
the previous executive director was in the position for more than
14 years. The challenge for the new executive director was to learn
about the organization, the industry, the members, the industry
partners, chapters, the internal operations, get to know the
staff, the officers, the Board of Directors, the standing committee
chairs and members – and there are many other areas that could
be mentioned. This would be enough for a yearlong challenge for
any individual stepping into a new role. At the same time, the new
executive director needed to be operational in all these areas to
keep the organization running as smoothly as possible during the
 lightwise/123RF
 It is simply a
 statement of
 fact that this
 has been a
 hard transition.
