HOFFMAN EQUIPMENT
 Approaching a century
 of growth and expertise
 By Jessica Bueno, Hoffman Equipment
Hoffman Equipment is a thriving family business specializing
in the sales, rentals, repairs and consulting
of earth-moving and lifting equipment. Since the
company’s founding in 1920, Hoffman has expanded to distribute
construction equipment to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania
and Delaware as well as its activities in the international market.
The company began as a partnership between Bill and Harry
 Hoffman with a single truck delivering roofing materials for installers;
it was then that Hoffman Motor Transportation was born. As
this business grew, the partners soon expanded into the rigging
and heavy hauling of structural steel and industrial boilers.
In 1949, Hoffman acquired its first crane. Acquiring a crane
was a massive upgrade to their operations, since it replaced the
 ASSOCIATE MEMBER
antiquated system of jacks, block and tackle, chain falls and certainly
a great amount of manpower. Shortly after this, Hoffman
Rigging & Crane Service Inc. was established and quickly grew
and complemented the transportation business. Into the ’60s and
’70s, Hoffman’s rigging and heavy lift business became centered
around the nascent nuclear power industry, performing rigging
service to the new plant construction that was happening all over
 the Northeast U.S.
In 1978, Hoffman “redirected” itself onto a new path, fundamentally
different from the rigging and transportation business
that ultimately leads to the business it is today. New nuclear plant
construction was dead, and Hoffman purchased an equipment
dealership, Roberts Equipment, in Piscataway, N.J.
