 Notable projects
The company has taken on a number of notable projects in recent
years, including two of the Pile Driving Contractors Association’s
Projects of the Year for 2018.
One was the Minto Brown Bridge, a visually striking pedestrian
bridge completed in 2017 that connects two heavily used parks in
Salem, Ore. Howell says that project presented some challenges
 because of its unique design.
An intricate falsework system needed to be constructed to support
the entire bridge while it was being built, he says, and it had
to be made in such a way that all the weight could be slowly and
incrementally released back onto the bridge’s supporting arches
 when the work was done.
“We drove quite a few piles for that bridge as well as for a temporary
work bridge that we built right beside it,” he said.
Howell says Legacy Contracting has completed several projects
for the Port of Port Angeles in Washington State, including repair
work on the port’s Terminal 1 loading dock that required 18,000
feet of pile to be installed.
Another project for the Port of Port Angeles, the construction
of the new Terminal 3 Headline Dolphin (a concrete structure supported
by steel piling), was the company’s second PDCA Project of
the Year Award winner for 2018.
Howell says one project that stands out for him involved a ferry
crossing on the Columbia River near Westport, Ore.
The ferry terminal on the Washington side of the river had to be
redeveloped to accommodate a larger ferry, and the other terminal
on the Oregon side had to be completely rebuilt. For that project,
