and electric. Chesterfield Associates provided temporary facilities
for these three utilities, which frequently needed to be moved and
 reconfigured as the construction progressed.
The pier and its flanking bulkheads at the landward end consisted
of approximately 900 linear feet of new SSP bulkhead with
tieback systems consisting of helical tiebacks, sheet pile deadman
walls or opposing pier walls as the support for the new walls. There
was approximately 600 linear feet of existing sheet piling to be
extracted and hauled to a recycling facility. The longest of the new
sheet piling needed to come in on specialized trailers hauling only
two pairs per trailer due to their weight.
As the bulkhead system progressed, it began to open up a
number of other tasks that would help advance Chesterfield’s
team toward successful completion of the project. The company
employed a handful of subcontractors, but the entire project
was under Chesterfield’s control and management. Chesterfield
Associates, Inc. was the prime contractor for this project. Tasks
that followed the bulkhead work included, but were not limited to,
a passive cathodic protection system, a timber pile fender system,
storm drain system, force main sewer, electric service for vessel
shore power and lighting, communications, marine hardware and
foundations to moor the vessels, water service, pedestrian gangway
for vessel access, guide railing, pedestrian railing, paving and
 striping.
The PJFTP was Chesterfield Associates’ second largest project
(more than $10 million) in its 50-year company history and a project
in which all of its employees are proud to have been a part. t
