Hale Centre Theatre Project,

The Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy, Utah is a 130,000 square foot
performing arts center scheduled to open in 2017 that will house
two theaters, a center stage and a proscenium thrust stage. The
new theatre will be a seven-story building with the stage level, pit
level and sub-pit level floors constructed below grade. The footings
for the pit level are located about 28 feet below the existing ground
surface and the foundation for the sub-pit level is located about an
additional 44 feet below the pit level. In August, 2015 Ralph L.
Wadsworth Construction Company, LLC (RLW) was contracted
to provide the design and installation of deep foundations to support
the new theater and an earth retaining system to facilitate the
excavation and construction of the new 50-foot diameter sub-pit
structure. The initial project documents specified that the deep
foundations were to consist of 36-inch diameter augercast-inplace
(ACIP) piles and that the new sub-pit foundation wall was
to consist of a permanent circular shaped secant wall. However,
during the bid process, RLW provided an alternate to replace the
ACIP piles with driven 16-inch diameter steel pipe piles and to
replace the secant wall with a temporary circular sheet pile wall.
For this project, Ralph L. Wadsworth met the challenge of this
difficult job, using cost savings and value engineering methods in
the design and construction of the sheet pile earth shoring system
and the driven foundation pile system. Both the client and owner
recognized the cost effectiveness of replacing the ACIP piles with
the driven foundation piles and appreciated RLW’s quality of work
and their ability to meet a demanding project schedule in a safe and
productive manner.
