PDCA ANNUAL AWARDS
Darling feels deeply honored
to receive Presidential Award for
Distinguished Service.
“It was just a wonderful feeling. To
serve PDCA has been one of the most
pleasurable parts of this industry for me,”
he said. “It’s just been my way of trying to
contribute back to an industry that I feel
very strongly about.”
Darling said his warmest memories
working with PDCA are of his time as
association president. “I really got to
see what the whole nuts and bolts of the
whole organization is really about and it
just made me even more proud to be able
to serve the organization.”
Family ties
Darling definitely has pile driving in his
blood. His grandfather founded Herbert
F. Darling more than 75 years ago and
passed it on to Darling’s father. Darling
joined the firm after graduating with a
Bachelor of Professional Studies degree
from Clarkson University in 1980.
“I was one of those rare kids who
knew exactly what he wanted to do when

in PDCA. He’s just been a real go-to
person for anything that you need.”

supervised the construction of the 2,000-
foot hard rock tunnel more than 20 years
ago but still remembers it well.
“It was very challenging, not only
from the technical tunneling aspect, but
from the health and safety aspect as well
because there were some very dangerous
conditions that we uncovered,” Darling
said, referring to toxic gas emissions and
extensive water infiltration. “It was definitely
the most challenging project of my
career, without a doubt.” t
