We used our Peerless Jet Pump, which is normally used for
jetting pile, to wash the sand under the dock. We built a special
jet pipe with nozzles attached and place it out in front of the sand
that was previously placed. The jet pipe system worked perfectly.
The jet pump supplied enough water movement under the dock
that the sand flowed with the water. Once the water could not flow
anymore, we moved the jet pipe down the next hole.
We continued this process for the whole 1,000 LF of the dock.
After completion of the sand fill, we had placed over 48,000 cubic
yards of underwater backfill and completely stabilized the dock
with no undue settlement since completion.
Innovative project management
Project management and scheduling also played a big role in the
successful completion of this project. We had to stay in close contact
with ARC Terminal because of their constant barge and ship,
loading and unloading operations. Since the new combi-wall was
being installed outside of the new dock, there was nowhere for
the ship to berth. ARC Terminal would have to determine the
length of the ships so temporary moorings and breasting structures
could be installed in the correct locations without impacting
day-to-day operations.
