The Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy, Utah is a 130,000
square foot performing arts center that will house two
theaters, a center stage and a proscenium thrust stage.
The new theatre is scheduled to open by the end of 2017 and will
be a seven-story building with the stage level, pit level and sub-pit
level floors constructed below grade. The footings for the pit level
are located about 28 feet below the existing ground surface and the
foundation for the sub-pit level is located about an additional 44
feet below the pit level.
In August 2015, Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company,
LLC (RLW) was contracted by Layton Construction to provide the
design and installation of deep foundations that were required to
support the new theater and an earth retaining system was that was
required to facilitate the excavation and construction of the new
50-foot-diameter sub-pit structure. The initial project documents
specified that the deep foundations were to consist of 36-inch
diameter augercast-in-place (ACIP) piles and that the new subpit
foundation wall was to consist of a permanent circular shaped
secant wall. However, during the bid process, RLW provided an
