during the pile installation. Halfway down the dock, the engineers
observed lateral movement towards the water – about two inches.
It was concluded that the vibratory hammer was causing too much
vibration once the pipe reached the dense sands. P&H’s suggestion
was to set the pipe and sheet pile with the vibratory hammer in the
upper loose soil layers. Once we reached the tighter soils, we would
stop and drive the pipe to grade using a Vulcan 8/0 air hammer
and the sheet pile with a D-19 diesel hammer. Once this method
was utilized, there were no more issues with movement of the dock.
Meeting the challenges of a difficult job
We knew from the onset that this was going to be a challenging
project. Not only were we installing a combi-wall adjacent to the
failing dock, we had to determine how to place the backfill under
