the association says. We have to

– Randy Kelly
some years ago entitled, ‘Why not Timber
Piles?’ In it, he outlined how, with due
engineering diligence, we can, and have,
driven timber piles with service loads of
40 and 50 tons with some regularity, and
even 70 to 75 ton service loads have been
achieved on timber piles safely. This takes
a little more time, testing and effort up
front, but the payoff to the owner in project
savings with ample safety factors can be

“This mutual trust allowed us to keep
our employees and our facilities safe,”
said Kelly.
Why use timber piling?
“I believe pressure-treated timber piles
are a greatly undervalued, underutilized
economic resource,” said Kelly. “Treated
wood is the economical solution to make
structures more durable, thereby increasing
safety while reducing both initial and
replacement costs.
“Many engineers consider timber
pilings only for low-capacity pile in the 20
to 30 service ton range. Scott Webster of
GRL Engineers and a board member and
treasurer at PDCA wrote a fantastic article
