Construction of the Sinton mill is expected to begin early in the
second quarter of 2021 and production by year end. The mill will
be part of the 2,600-acre Steel Dynamics Inc. production campus.
JM Steel will provide coil slitting services from its facility on the
same campus.
The spiral weld pipe will be manufactured to the same specifications
that HDM is known for globally.
“We are very excited knowing that, through our new partnership,
we will bring standout-quality, low-cost products to the
domestic market,” said Abbondanza. The mill will also bring up
to 50 new jobs to the area, along with several new positions in the
Houston head office.
“The mill location is ideal for reducing costs and speeding up
the manufacturing process,” said Abbondanza.
Being located on campus with the coil producer will provide
the JV significant advantages: lower costs and reduced time from
order to delivery.
“These are among the advantages we will be able to pass on to
our customers,” said Abbondanza, pointing out that the product
will be available in a flexible range of new diameters, wall thicknesses
and lengths that current domestic producers do not offer.
The JV team already has further expansion in mind; they have
designed the Sinton mill to be expandable to accommodate
growth for future demand and new projects.
Another change of focus: Increasing business in the
construction industry
As well as establishing itself as a steel-products manufacturer, JD
Fields is looking to grow in other ways. While it considers new
locations, it is also moving increasingly to serve the construction

A spiral weld pipe primer
Spiral weld pipe is manufactured from steel
coil wound on an angle. It is created through
the following process:
1. Coils of steel are unwound and flattened
into sheets
2. Edges of the sheets are prepared for
welding one to another
3. The sheets are rolled, on an angle, to a
pipe shape and specified dimensions
4. Where sheets join, the pipe is welded,
both inside and outside, as it rolls on the
machinery
5. A plasma torch cuts the pipe to the
required length
Spiral weld pipes are noted for their strength
and customizability.
