PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
Norwalk Marine Contractors’ Junttan PM25 rig
Pile Driving Analyzer® (PDA) with GRLWEAP14
Newly released GRLWEAP14's features help im prove the accuracy of
predicted stresses, bearing capacities, blow counts and install ation
time. Results are further refined when matched with measurement
results defined by the Pile Driving Analyzer® system (PDA).
• Simulates the pile r esponse to impact or vibratory hammer forces
• Helps select appropriate hammer and driving system with k nown piling, soil
and capacity requirements
• Determines pile driveability and estimates total driving time
• Available in standard and offshore versions

Another obstacle was navigating underground obstructions
(large boulders). NMC was required to install replacement piles
when obstructions were encountered.
“It is important to note that a traditional rigid inclusion
would have similar issues dealing with a high-water table and
underground obstructions,” he said.
Even with the obvious challenges the team faced on this
project, Andrew calls the process of developing a timber inclusion
design exciting.
“You get to save developers money, while providing
a superior product. Testing of the timber inclusions mainly
involves developing a driving criteria using Wave Equation. If
necessary, the timber inclusions can be tested with a Pile Driving
Analyzer and/or static load tests, but it is not necessary. By
utilizing the Wave Equation, every pile is a tested by driving to a
penetration resistance.”
Longtime PDCA member
A member of PDCA for more than 20 years, NMC founder Skip
Gardella served as PDCA president in 1996 and 1997.
“The benefits of being a member are being aware of the industry,
value engineering and codes,” said Andrew. “PDCA also provides a
robust network of suppliers, contractors and engineers who are up
to date on the latest technologies and projects.” t
