S.J. Ludlow Consulting Engineers,
Inc. keeps its focus

Workers have been slamming posts into the
ground to make strong foundations for walls,
buildings and bridges for a very long time, and
although the basic idea is still the same, today’s pile driving industry
has developed methods of application and performance that
are nothing short of amazing.
Scott Ludlow, Ph.D., P.E., president and principal engineer at S.J.
Ludlow Consulting Engineers, Inc. (SJL Engineers) has dedicated
his professional life as an engineer to furthering this history of
excellence and opportunity in the deep foundation industry.
“I began my career in Madison, Wisc., with a large multidisciplinary
civil/engineering design company, and while working
for them, I got some great opportunities and experience,” said
Ludlow. “From there I went out and started my own company,
SJL Engineers, incorporated in 1990. Two years later, I bought
into another company, became the president, eventually leaving
there in 2012 to focus on SJL Engineers as a specialized consulting
engineering firm providing services in the areas of geostructural
engineering and nondestructive testing of foundations.”

Despite an extensive portfolio of work, the company has
remained small in size in order to keep its focus on certain areas
of engineering work.
“We have a staff of only four people,” said Ludlow. “My son Kyle
Ludlow, P.E. is the senior engineer, having worked with me while
going to school to earn his engineering degree at an early age. Kirk
Egold performs much of the nondestructive testing (i.e., PDA, PIT,
CSL, TIP and vibration monitoring), and my daughter, Erin, is our
administrative assistant.
“We provide engineering services for foundation design, tunneling
and trenchless methods, excavation support for both
temporary and permanent works – a hybrid of sorts between
