business, away from the oil and gas industry that has been its longtime
major market. (The oil and gas industry has been badly hit by
the pandemic, with fuel consumption down and spending plans
on hold.)
As infrastructure spending is a key focal point of the federal
government, the company hopes to supply a widening customer
base across the country. And, when the COVID-19 pandemic
comes to an end and the economy returns to strength, JD Fields
will be in a position to serve more private construction projects
as they ramp up. (The company has seen its challenges in the
pandemic. The most noticeable difference, says Abbondanza, is
how salespeople have adjusted to their day-to-day work, having to
become accustomed to interacting with clients online, rather than
seeing them face to face.)
Among the projects completed in the last couple of years using
JD Fields-supplied piling products are the following:
• Outerbridge Crossing, a cantilever bridge across the Arthur
Kill strait in New York City, 2019 – 5,600 tons of 36” x 1.0” wall x
140’ delivered in full lengths, coated, shoes attached and ready
to drive
• St. Johns River basin inlet channel in Indian River County, Fla.,
2020 – 200 tons of ZZ 19-700, coated 100% both sides
• Office complex deep foundation in Albany, N.Y., 2020 – 2,457
tons of piling
• Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit in Windsor, Calif., 2020 – 300-
plus tons of pipe piling, H-piles and sheet piles
