PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
Coating the upper 45 feet of the piles with Amerlock 400 provided
significant additional life span for the building
were encountered during indicator piles as well as production
piles. These obstructions had to be excavated and removed by
the contractor, which required assistance and coordination with
FCI’s team.
The Amerlock 400 coating created multiple challenges of its
own. The double handling and shipping of the material to the
coating contractor created an added layer of coordination to
ensure the project remained on schedule. FCI crews also had to
take additional precautions in the field to ensure the coating was
not damaged during handling of the pile material. Any damage
would require the coating to be re-applied, causing delays to the
schedule. However, coating the upper 45 feet of the piles with
Amerlock 400 provided significant additional life span for the
building. FCI was able to work with the coating contractor and
various trucking contractors to provide a lower overall cost on
the double handling and shipping of the material to the coaters,
and to the site. This allowed the owner to receive the maximum
benefit with a lower cost, and a better finished product once the
piles were installed.
Lastly, the project had a mat foundation that encompassed
a footprint of 70 feet by 50 feet and 177 piles, which required an
excavation of approximately 10 feet deep to reach top of pile. This
area could not be open cut and sloped due to the overall size of
the site and was eventually the leading cause for the complex
shoring design.
Given all of the project challenges and constraints, FCI was able
to produce a safe and successful project.
“Team collaboration and the specialized site knowledge
from Foundation was key to the success of this project,”
said Alex Ojeda, project manager with Hathaway Dinwiddie
Construction Company.
