“I felt a little scared because, you know, it’s getting out of your
comfort zone,” she said. “But the thing is, what’s the alternative if
you don’t do it? You just become kind of stagnant and then you
end your career. Is that what you really want? I knew I had a lot to
offer, so then I was really excited about the opportunity.”
A new future
As president, Sanders’ priority is to get the firm back on track
from the effects of COVID-19 and focus on implementing their
strategic plan.
“Some strategic planning involves reevaluation of where we
are and where we want to go,” said Sanders. “It marries well with
a new presidency and where I want to take the company. We have
a really great staff. It’s honestly an honor to be their leader. I think
they’re doing a great job. Hopefully, I don’t screw it up!”
When it comes to helping more women enter into an
engineering career, Sanders has some sage advice.
“Be assertive in what you want; if you know what you want,
communicate that. Find a mentor. We certainly try in our office to
pass information down, but it’s not always seamless. Sometimes,
it’s easy to stay in your comfort zone. But you just have to push
yourself so you stay engaged and excited about what you’re doing
and learning something new.”
PDCA is a huge asset when it comes to continuous learning
opportunities, an asset that aligns with the opportunity of careerlong
learning, according to Sanders.
“Being a PDCA member builds relationships between
contractors and engineers. It’s a very good dialogue, giving
engineers insight into what’s practical and constructible.
“There’s still the opportunity to learn new things. When the
young people come on, they ask when I mastered such and such
a topic. And I’m like, well, I’m still learning that!” t
