Adding to the complexity of the project was the fact that
everything had to be flown in, so planning had to be meticulous.
“Once the Sky-Crane was on site, the planning had been completed,”
said Scholz. “The steel caissons and poles had undergone
an inspection by a registered engineer to ensure they complied
with the project drawings. Each morning (or evening), the
Erickson pilot would discuss the sequence of the lifts. The layout
crew then placed each pole and caisson in a predetermined order
and installed the necessary hardware on them in accordance
with the pre-flight checklists. While this was being completed,
a separate crew conducted preflight inspections on the powerpacks
and vibratory hammers. There was a steady stream of fuel
tankers arriving and departing to the site as the S-64 can burn
around 500 to 600 gallons an hour.”
The first step in the construction sequence to install the
transmission poles was to remove the existing wood piles. The
