Tectonic has earned praise for being an environmental leader
in its work in New Jersey. In 2015 it established the New
Jersey-based subsidiary Tectonic CMI Corp., which specializes
in construction management and abatement services. That
office focuses predominantly on environmental services including
site remediation, asbestos abatement and environmental
assessments to evaluate the impacts from contamination or the
presence of hazardous materials. New Jersey staff also provide
presentations on updates to local environmental regulations and
some of the dos and don’ts about how companies can comply
with those regulations.
While the bulk of Tectonic’s employees are based in the
New York-New Jersey-Connecticut region, the company also has
offices in Richmond, Va., Tampa, Fla., Tempe, Ariz. and Newport
Beach, Calif.
One of the things Benvie says his company is particularly
proud of is the sense of loyalty among its staff. The average term
of employment for its senior employees, including field resident
engineers, is between 15 and 20 years. That continuity has
allowed Tectonic to offer clients a wide range of services as part
of a single package.
“We’re able to bundle all of those services in-house so when a
client or owner or a contractor is in need of services, we can go
to them and say, ‘We can provide you with the field personnel to
oversee the pile load test and do the production pile inspection,’
but also meet the requirements that they may have to monitor the
adjacent structure for vibration or movement, which increases our
ability to be responsive to the client and have better control over a
project,” said Benvie.
Tectonic has been something of a pioneer when it comes to
the use of drone technology in construction. It was one of the
first engineering companies in New York to incorporate the use
of drones to perform a number of tasks including aerial and topographic
mapping work, site reconnaissance, wetlands mapping
and structural investigations. Although the technology isn’t heavily
used in relation to its pile driving services as of yet, Benvie says it
could have implications for that type of work in the not-too-distant
future for applications such as determining the best areas for contractors
to set up laydown areas for a project or install access roads
to a construction area.
Tectonic has been a member of the Pile Driving Contractors
Association (PDCA) for the past decade. Benvie says it was a
natural partnership for his company since it has always felt a kinship
to the different organizations that represent the geotechnical
and deep foundation industries. He is particularly happy with
PDCA’s efforts to help inform its members through activities such
as local continuing education seminars and would like to see the
organization devote more resources to those kinds of initiatives.
“That would go a long way with our professional members,”
he said. t
