to the hammer. The flown weight of the
vibratory hammer with beam and caisson
clamps was approximately 16,875 lbs. The
Erickson Air-Crane involved in this project
was Erickson’s Sikorsky S-64. Its variants
have a load rating from approximately
25,000 lbs. The caissons being driven were
weighing in around 5,500 lbs.”
The Sikorsky S-64 has a unique aft-facing
pilot station that allows for the development
of a transmission line construction
system that is cost-competitive with conventional
methods.
According to Erickson, a leader in SKY
CRANE® heavy-lift operations that support
power transmission and infrastructure
projects, this system offers major benefits
to contractors, such as the following:
•• Erickson’s central assembly yards are
strategically located to minimize labor
travel time and other inefficiencies
that allow foremen to closely supervise
tower assembly
•• The company offers precise tower erection
scheduling and has the flexibility to
change course at a moment’s notice
•• The company is able to set towers in
place quickly
•• The company can deliver to remote and
mountainous terrain, which is inaccessible
to ground-based vehicles

this project was without its challenges.
