Tectonic Carves Out Niche
in Tri-State Market
Evolving for industry
By Jim Timlick
It’s been said that if you can make it in
New York, you can make it anywhere.
While it’s unlikely the writers of
New York, New York had the construction
industry in mind when they penned
that tune, it does accurately sum up the
story of Tectonic Engineering Consultants,
Geologists and Land Surveyors D.P.C.
Based in Mountainville, N.Y., about an
hour outside of New York City, Tectonic
has grown from a small geotechnical
engineering firm established by partners
Donald Benvie and Richard Kummerle more
than 30 years ago to a multi-disciplined
business that now employs more than 500
professionals including civil, structural,
environmental and geotechnical engineers,
geologists, surveyors and construction
managers and inspectors. It’s earned
numerous awards along the way, including
the Engineering Excellence Award from
the American Council of Engineering
Companies, and has been ranked among
the top 200 firms on Engineering News-
Record’s Top 500 Design Firms.
Although geotechnical engineering
remains at the core of the company’s efforts,
its three areas of primary focus these days
are transportation and infrastructure, public
and private land development and wireless
telecommunications.
Benvie, Tectonic’s current president
and CEO, says his company’s evolution
Tectonic Engineering Consultants, Geologists and Land Surveyors D.P.C.
