CAREER STORY
the early stages. One of the things I do as chief engineer is review
the work and qualifications of all of the technical people who are
considered for promotion to principal. Because of that, it’s allowed
me to strengthen the role of what it means to be a principal at the
company, which is a position I held for many years.”
One of the lessons Higgins teaches his younger colleagues is the
importance of building professional relationships with contractors
– especially the ones who do the work that young engineers design.
In fact, it’s the importance of building these relationships that got
Higgins involved in the PDCA on a national level.
“When I was younger, I was mentored by principals who
believed building relationships with contractors was a good thing
and they showed me how to develop those relationships. I’ve
embodied that in my career,” he said. “In 1995, I joined PDCA. One
of the reasons I joined was because one of the contractors I had
worked with was a member and encouraged me to do it. To me, it
was an important step in my career to reach out and have professional
relationships that aren’t necessarily on the engineering side
but on the contracting side.”
The educational opportunities that PDCA offers are just as
important as the relationships it can help members foster, according
to Higgins.
“I think that education is the primary goal of the organization.
It’s about understanding the industry more deeply.
The best way to understand the industry more deeply is to
understand how it works. And that comes through education.
Networking is important. There are opportunities for that, and
for training, of course. There’s a lot to learn, so it requires investment
of your time to be a member. But I feel that I get more out
of PDCA than I put into it.”
As a teacher, relationship builder and chief engineer, it’s safe
to say that Karl Higgins is well on his way to building a legacy. t
