are plans to open a second Canadian
branch next year as well.
Junttan’s roots go back to the 1960s
when it operated as a construction firm
in Finland. In the 1970s, the company
began building purpose-built hydraulic pile
driving rigs as a way to create a safer and
more productive machine to assist in its
construction efforts.
The stand-alone rigs became highly
sought after by others in the industry,
however, and by the end of the decade,
Junttan Oy had switched its focus entirely
to manufacturing its own unique brand of
pile driving rigs.
Miika Eskelinen, general manager of
Junttan USA and Canadian Pile Driving
Equipment, credits mobility and ease of use
as key factors behind the initial popularity
of Junttan’s purpose-built rigs, as there were
no other pile driving devices on the market
that could be put to work so fast.
“You could get the rig to the job site in
one piece with a truck and lowboy trailer,
and then start piling in 15 minutes,” he
said. “You don’t have to use three or four
truckloads to bring it in and then build the
rig over two to three days.”
Worldwide sales
Junttan’s lineup of pile driving rigs and
hydraulic hammers is now sold in more
than 40 countries around the world, but
according to Tim Dutton, Junttan USA’s
vice president of sales and operations, it’s
when Junttan was introduced to the North
American market in the mid-1990s that
sales really took off.
“Once we established our presence in
North America, it was just a continued
growth year after year,” he said.
Dutton says that Junttan USA currently
does the majority of its business in
northeastern states. By opening branches
in Florida and California, the company
is aiming to take advantage of the
strengthening construction markets in the
southeastern U.S. and on the West Coast.
“This will allow us to get really good
coverage throughout the United States
to support our product,” said Dutton. He
adds Junttan USA can provide that support
because it works more like a distributor than
a manufacturer. “At our Delaware location,
we have close to $750,000 in part stock. We
also have the in-house expertise to support
all aspects of maintenance, repairs and
overhauls of our client’s equipment.”
