CAREER STORY
Jay Boyd, Balfour
Beatty Infrastructure
Construction is all in the family
By Nick Mistretta
Jay Boyd got his start in the
construction industry by taking a
job that very few people wanted.
But it was that uncertain first step that
helped open doors that fate would be
envious of.
Boyd started his career with Tidewater
Construction in 1987, just one year
removed from high school. And about that
job that no one else wanted?
“I was offered a position as a fireman
on a floating steam-driven pile rig,” said
Boyd. “My duties were to fire a vertical
boiler that supplied steam to the crane,
pile hammer and deck wenches.”
