CAREER STORY
have lots of doctors and lawyers and teachers and realtors, etc.
But I assure you, I’m the only pile driver.”
Robbins says he feels a special kinship with his fellow pile
drivers for that reason.
“It’s a unique fraternity. I’ve made friends literally from coast
to coast that at any time in my career, I could just call and get
their perspective on various problems we may have,” he said.
Many of those friendships were forged during his time with
PDCA, where he served in a variety of capacities including as
association president in 2006.
Robbins says when he first got involved with the association
20 years ago, it was to address what he saw as a disturbing
development in the deep foundation business.
“The alternatives to driven piles had started to make some
inroads into coastal South Carolina. In my opinion, these alternatives
did not match the quality control and effectiveness of
driven piles, but their marketing was much, much better than
ours,” he said. “All of the pile drivers in our area were small-
to medium-sized contractors, and individually we lacked the
resources to effectively market our product, the driven pile.
