By Jason Moore, President, PDCA
In January, the PDCA Board of
Directors met in Charleston, S.C. for
the 2020 Strategic Planning Meeting.
We walked away with three themes: manage
the structure and finances of the association
for continued growth, expand
membership through local chapter initiatives
and strengthen the PDCA standing
committees.
We had no idea that we’d be reorganizing
each of these goals three months later
around a pandemic.
Optimist: “Frank, we’ve just got to get
through the next six to eight weeks.”
Realist: “Jason, things are never going to
be the same, and we need to be thinking
about how that impacts our current
and future plans.”
PDCA Board of Directors March
2020 filter:
• Without unnecessarily affecting member
experience or value, cut expenses.
• Wherever possible, create opportunities
for connection and further involve our
members in the work of the association.
• Use the shutdowns as an opportunity
to develop new skillsets and capacities.
When it’s all over, let’s not look back and
find that we wasted any time.
By all accounts, 2020 could be expected
to deal a crippling blow to most associations.
Understanding that the full effects
of the coronavirus on associations won’t be
known for years, I am excited to report that
PDCA is financially healthy and continues
to invest in its future. The association’s
education, outreach and network offering
looked more different than we could ever
have anticipated, but PDCA will finish 2020
on high notes, including a positive income
and increased member participation in
association activities.
The lifeblood of the association is active
membership participation and healthy
relationships. How do we accomplish that
in a year when relationships are on hold all
over the world?
• Five annual conference webinars, which
included more than 10 hours of fantastic
education and quality music (cue Frank’s
Pandora account with ads)
• A virtual DICEP program, including
presentations on steel sheet pile
design and installation (be sure to
catch Gerry McShane’s Fast and
Furious reference by viewing the
webinar at www.piledrivers.org)
and wave equation analysis (I was pleasantly
surprised by the number of folks
sending me questions to post so that they
wouldn’t be seen as “that guy,” which tells
me the content nailed a specific need)
