capacities ranging from 25 tons to more than 100 tons in either
end-bearing on a competent bearing layer (i.e., rock or very
dense ground) or by using an oversized pile shoe and continuously
pumping grout during driving to create an efficient groutto
ground bond zone for frictional capacity similar to a micropile.
Representatives of GeoStructures, Inc. worked closely with the
design team to develop a pile design concept using 40-ton DIPs to
support compression loads on pile caps and grade beams. The DIP
design consisted of Series 118/7.5 piles (118 mm diameter with 7.5
mm wall thickness) driven through the terrace and residual deposits
to terminate by achieving set for end-bearing in weathered rock.
In a number of locations, the piles were required to support 40-ton
compression loads as well as five-ton tension loads.
During the demolition work at the site, the entire structure was
razed except for the lowest two floors of the street-facing, exterior
façade which were braced for construction. After mobilization of
the 20-ton excavator, material was delivered by DuroTerra and
then staged on the site by stacking bundles of five-meter long
sticks. GeoStructures then installed test piles to verify the compression
and tension design capacity. Full-scale load testing confirmed
deflection of the 25-foot long compression test pile was
less than 0.25-inch at the 40-ton design load and exhibited acceptable
overall performance. Tension testing also verified acceptable
results at the limited uplift load of five tons.
GeoStructures’ production installation immediately started by
driving piles to achieve set in the weathered rock. A total of 145
piles were installed from the working grade to depths on the order
