“I enjoy the heavy civil projects we get to be involved in,” said
Bell. “When you’re in engineering school, you always like to think
you’ll design the next mega bridge. I’m not designing them, but to
be involved with them is exciting.”
“I find it cool to go to a football game or a baseball game or a
movie and feel ‘Hey, I was a part of that!’” said Conklin, whose past
projects have included work on the Atlanta Falcons’ Mercedes-
Benz Stadium, the Cincinatti Bengals’ Paul Brown Stadium and
Great American Ball Park for the Reds.
Considering that steel is a largely male-dominated industry, the
women say they feel little discrimination once they have proved
their mettle.
“Everybody in this industry has been pretty open and receptive
to women. Most of the time there don’t seem to be any issues. As
long as you’re knowledgeable, they’re willing and open to listen to
you,” said Honeyman.
“In current events, there are a lot of complaints that females
aren’t treated fairly, but I feel the opposite in this industry,” said
Conklin. “I do think that people are shocked when I answer the
phone. Right away, if I can answer their question, I feel some shock
in their voice, because they expect sales staff to be men.”
“For women, and this is my experience,” said Bell, “When we
meet a new contact for the first time, the hill that we have to climb
to establish our credibility is steeper than a man, but once you’re
over the hump, you’re there.”
“One of my biggest challenges in the beginning was feeling I was
underestimated,” said Petras. “But that’s my biggest driver, so every
day I put effort into achieving.”
Recruiting more women into construction
“Encouraging a young woman’s interest in math and science early
on is crucial to getting more women into the industry,” said Bell.
“Exposing young women to these career paths and letting them
know this is a possibility is definitely a step in the right direction.”
Johnson Kieffer agrees.
“It actually starts before high school: teaching girls that they
don’t have to be only English teachers and nurses,” she said. “To be
an engineer, you don’t have to be a man.”
“The industry is changing. I think there is a conscious effort to
promote women in the industry and to get more women engaged,”
said Bell. “I think we’re heading in the right direction.” t
