Future
Infrastructure
Modernization
and the Pile
Driving Industry
By Scott Callaway, President, PDCA
It’s a good a time to be in the construction industry in America; business is going well
for contractors in many building sectors. That prosperity trickles down to manufacturers,
suppliers and other supporting businesses. Jobs are available and, in some
instances, can be hard to fill. Help wanted signs dot the offices of contractors, engineering
firms, factories, trucking companies, dealerships…the list goes on. Construction booms
are a natural part of an economic cycle that produces prosperous times and also some
difficult times. We should make the most of the good times because downturns are unpredictable
and inevitable.
It’s worth noting as we begin to wind down 2019 that a national infrastructure modernization
plan is increasingly necessary and would ensure continued prosperous times for
the construction industry. It was disappointing to many of us earlier this year when what
appeared to be bipartisan agreement to pursue a $2-trillion federal infrastructure initiative
fell apart due to the political atmosphere in Washington. While this sort of initiative
would be a great boon to our economy, continued low-unemployment numbers and a
prosperous American business community, it would also provide our country improved
safety and needed modernization.
While talks on the national infrastructure overhaul fizzled out in April, a reauthorization
of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act comes due in 2020 and
fortunately the work on this legislation is in motion. If enacted, it will address crumbling
roads and aging bridges across America. It would also provide significant work for the
construction sector. A first draft of the new surface transportation bill cleared a U.S. Senate

We can comfortably and collectively say
that those politicians who have a track
record in elected office of successfully
passing infrastructure-related measures
are worth your consideration.
