allow the automobile transports to offload directly. Quonset
Development Corporation, working directly with Nucor Skyline,
purchased 2,200 tons of 24-inch by 0.625-inch pipe pile, which
will be used as the foundation for the new extension. The new
pier will be 232 feet long and 124 feet wide when complete.
Once the pipe piles are driven to depth, precast pile caps and
concrete decking will be put in place and the pier will become
operational. Once this phase of the construction is complete,
the area in front of Pier 2 will be dredged to accommodate larger
ships. This will allow NORAD to expand their record-breaking
car import business. The rehabilitation of Pier 2 will permit the
Port of Davisville to play an important role in the ramp up of
the wind industry. The equipment used for the offshore wind
industry is extremely heavy and requires a wharf that can bear
the weight, while also allowing for heavy lift platforms. This
makes the new rehabilitated Pier 2 the perfect choice for this
emerging industry.
Specialty Diving Services (SDS) was contracted for this
phase of the rehabilitation project. Using an APE Model 200T
vibratory hammer, SPS would pre-vibrate the piles into position,
and then use an APE Model D30-52 impact hammer with
modified offshore leads to drive the piles to bearing capacity.
A third berth off the south side of the pier will follow in the
third phase of construction at the Port of Davisville. This project
will begin bidding in the fall of 2019. The additional space
generated by the completed project, including the king pile wall
fortifications, pipe pile pier addition and dredging project, gives
the pier another 50 years of life. t
