STEEL SHEET PILING
CORROSION GUIDE
The cost of steel sheet piled walls was in the range
of 60 to 95 percent of the cost of tangent walls
and 24 to 41 percent the cost of secant walls.
Hartman Engineering and Brian Heck and David Keller of Richard
Goettle Inc. offer to do both the design element and cost estimating
portion of the new work.
After six months of continuous revision and updating, the
publications were ready for Lester Publications to format
for printing.
The Best Practices Sheet Piling Installation Guide became the
PDCA Sheet Piling Installation Guide. This has been thoroughly
updated in terms of changes brought about by equipment innovation
that has led to advances in installation methods.
The Technical Bulletin on Corrosion became the Steel Sheet
Piling Corrosion Guide. The main complaint of the original
document was the lack of references to the many claims made.
The revised publication contains multiple references, helping
the reader understand the principles behind many of the
statements presented.
The Retaining Wall comparison Technical Report became the
Retaining Wall Cost Comparison Guide. This guide was completely
re-written and focused specifically on retaining walls that
directly compete with steel sheet piling, specifically tangent walls
and secant walls. The cost estimate considered both the Midwestern
U.S. and the East Coast to give a broad market relevance.
The new Retaining Wall Cost Comparison Guide had three
key outcomes.
First, the cost of steel sheet piled walls was in the range of 60
to 95 percent of the cost of tangent walls and 24 to 41 percent the
cost of secant walls.
Secondly, the construction schedule of steel sheet piled walls
was similar to tangent walls but approximately one-third that for
secant walls.
And third, the value in use, taking into account the cost of
material along with the impact of construction scheduling on the
successful outcome of a project, strongly favors steel sheet piling.
All three publications are now available from PDCA in both digital
and printed formats. Please visit the PDCA Store to see these
and also the accompanying highly comprehensive Steel Sheet
Piling Noise and Vibration Database.
The cost of the Steel Sheet Piling Corrosion Guide is USD$50.00;
Retaining Wall Cost Comparison Guide is USD$50.00; and the Steel
Sheet Pile Installation Guide is USD$80.00.
The Steel Sheet Pile Committee is now working on further
NASSPA publications with an expected publication date of mid-
December 2019. t
