King says the biggest challenges his team had on the $3-million
pile driving project included steel market prices, which fluctuated.
“We ordered 90 percent of the steel in May 2018 because of a
mill rolling and before a price increase,” he said. “The steel piles
were selected by the design team.”
King says the other big challenge his team faced was that “the
project’s design team couldn’t keep up with our piling. To remedy
this, we left to drive a test pile program in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
We then went back and drove another section at J.W. Aluminum,
which took about two weeks. This was while the other project piles
were being cast. We then went back to Mt. Pleasant and drove a
medical office building for about three weeks.”
When it came to challenges related to geology/soil and noise or
vibration abatement, there were few issues, says King.
“The soil consultants did the original geotech exploration,”
said King. “They performed the PDA restrikes and also recorded
the driving logs on each pile and did some occasional vibration
monitoring. And, since we used the Junttan rigs, noise was never
an issue.”
As for what he liked most about this project, he said, “My favorite
part of the project was being so far ahead of schedule that it
made weekly scheduled meetings fun to attend!” t
