By Lisa Kopochinski
Construction remains well underway on the expansion
of J.W. Aluminum’s plant in Goose Greek, S.C. With a
completion date slated for early 2020, this expansion at
the company’s Berkeley County operations is expected to bring in
more than $250 million in capital investment and create dozens of
new jobs.
The company was founded in 1979 in Mount Holly, S.C., as Jim
Walter Metals, a single-facility operation with 10 employees. Over
the past four decades, J.W. Aluminum has established itself as a
leading producer of flat-rolled aluminum, which is used in numerous
consumer and commercial products.
The company manufactures building and distributor sheets,
fin stock, cable wrap, honeycomb foil and more. It has nearly 800
employees (or “teammates” as they are known) in four aluminum
mills throughout the country – St. Louis, Mo.; Russellville, Ark.;
Williamsport, Pa.; and Goose Creek.
The expansion at the Goose Creek location (which serves as its
headquarters) includes the construction of a new, 220,000-squarefoot
building – the size of about four football fields.
The expansion is also expected to add 50 new jobs to its nearly
400-member workforce currently employed at this local plant.
