PDCA STEEL MEMBER – STEEL PROJECT
Mare Harbour Project,
Falkland Islands
By Bruce Colson, ESC Steel LLC
ESC Steel LLC, a provider of high
grade domestic and international
piling products throughout
North America, was awarded a contract
to supply 800 MT of mooring pile for
Mare Harbour RoRo facility upgrade project
in the Falkland Islands, a remote South
Atlantic archipelago.
The scope of ESC’s supply contract
included the pipe pile and the pile head
steel structure, comprised of bollards,
anchor bolts, fenders, chains and other
related connection parts. The steel pipe
piles ranged in size from 42-inch OD to
98-inch OD.
ESC Steel formed the longitudinal submerged
arc welded (LSAW) steel pipe at
its facility in China, retesting all heat numbers
to confirm material mechanical properties
and chemical composition were as
requested by the client. The company maintained
the material traceability throughout
the production processes – starting from
incoming raw material to the finished product
– by physical markings and impeccable
recordkeeping. Welding was carried out
in accordance with ISA 15614 standards,
with all welds tested by 100 percent visual
inspection, 100 percent ultrasonic test and
10 percent magnetic particle inspection.
After the welding of grout pipes, the pipes
were then tested at 2MPa and held for
15 minutes with a water pressure test to
ensure no leakage.
For the mooring pile head forming, all
components were delivered as loose items
and trial assembled as per design drawings
to minimize the risk of delivering any
defective components in the field. Those
components included pile head stiffeners,
ladders, trunnions, handrails and the pile
head structures.
Any materials that would be exposed
to the harsh South Atlantic Ocean were
