doesn’t always offer great work-life balance, especially during
COVID, oddly enough, so I think we just try to do our best!
Amy: The pandemic has forced many families to take on
typical gender roles, and ours has been similarly affected simply
by the fact that Paul is not able to work from home on a regular
basis. As mentioned, his job is 24/7 – he is always on. This
situation has heightened levels of anxiety due to the unknowns
and uncertainties. Everyone is exhausted, making it hard to stay
physically healthy and find a balance.
How do you and your spouse/partner approach
business vs. the personal part of your lives? Do you
try to maintain a definitive line or is it more of a
grey area?
Minnie: We know that certain items need to remain confidential,
but I think we know each other’s strengths well and that if we need
to bounce an idea or two off each other, we are quite open to do so.
Todd: As I mentioned earlier, we both respect that our
business lives are important to us and that our roles cannot always
be “turned off.” However, we both greatly value our personal time
and family lives and some things, like time at our cottage, remains
sacred. Personally, I enjoy hearing about the business side from
Liz. I find the club industry very fascinating. I also value Liz’s
opinion and she is often my sounding board for issues I have at my
work. It is good to get perspectives from another industry.
Beth: At his previous club, our personal and work lives were
kept fairly separate. At this current club, it has much more of a
family feel and there is more of an opportunity to cross that line.
Unfortunately, my schedule keeps me very busy, making it difficult
for me to make it to the club that often. I can see there being an
opportunity to become more a part of this club in the future.
Mandy: We definitely protect a small part of each day for us
when there is no email or work texting. It may only be for an hour
before bed, but we really value that time.
Amy: It is certainly more of a grey area. We are looking to get
some tips and implement best practices from Eve Rodsky’s Fair
Play as a way to better address this. We have also implemented a
screen-free mealtime rule that helps us better connect as a family.
Tell us something about your spouse/partner that
may surprise their colleagues.
Minnie: If I really need to pick one, he is a good dance partner for
our son.
Todd: Just one? Given her accounting background, there are
many elements about Liz that break the “accountant” stereotype.
For one, she was a high-level whitewater kayak instructor in a
former life where she paddled and taught whitewater rafting on
the Class 3 and 4 rapids of the Ottawa River. Oh, and that she was
captain of the University of Western Ontario Drinking Team.
Beth: He loves close-up magic.
Mandy: He is directionally challenged. We travelled to
London and Paris a few years ago and it became a running
joke of the trip that whenever he advised which way to go, he
was incorrect.
Amy: He is very creative. He has an artistic side to him, which
he has leaned into over this past year. It is an important part of
him that I am excited and happy to see him explore.
