PROJECT SPOTLIGHT
LEEP Mats are generally constructed of Douglas
Fir Grade 1 lumber. Mats are put through a rigorous
inspection process prior to being assigned a grade
and becoming available for use.

required capacity of 1,720 kips. The HP
14x73 test pile had a three day restrike
capacity of 860 kips and 23 days after
installation the static load test was performed,
which terminated at 1,000 kips.
Using dynamic testing to determine the
pile capacity at the time of installation
and during short-term restrikes, along
with the long-term static load tests were
all used in conjunction to allow for a
thorough understanding of the ultimate
pile capacities with respect to time. Given
that information, monitoring production
piles during driving confirmed that the
piles were “tracking” with their ultimate
pile capacity requirements.
In addition to using dynamic testing
to verify pile capacity and hammer
performance during production driving,
unusual or questionable driving conditions
were investigated using testing. The
dense silt pockets caused piles to unexpectedly
terminate short of the expected
depths. These piles along with piles
with suspected damaged based on unusual
blow counts during installation, were
tested in order to determine pile capacity
and/or integrity.
The AA Hangar 2 required a large
number of piles to be installed in difficult
conditions, mainly due to the high pile
capacities, large hammers and strict installation
requirements of the batter piles.
With a thorough load testing program and
Thatcher’s adaptability to the challenging
installation requirements, the foundation
was confidently installed to the highest
loads allowed by the City of Chicago. t
