MEMBER PROFILE – ENGINEERING AFFILIATE
Founding member Bruce Weber is no longer
affiliated with the company. Bogdan
Winiarczyk passed away in 2014.
The company is comprised of two
structural engineers, two geotechnical
engineers and two CAD designers – who
total more than 100 years of combined
experience.
“The majority of our projects are
located in the Minneapolis area and
greater Minnesota, as well as Wisconsin,
North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and
Nebraska,” said Underwood. “However, we
are licensed to practice engineering in several
other states throughout the Upper
Midwest and Central U.S.”
EPI, which practices primarily in the
areas of structural foundation, geotechnical
and construction engineering, provides
analysis and design services for construction
of numerous types of projects, including:
•• Structural and foundation design
for buried civil works and underground
structures
•• Earth retention systems – permanent
and temporary
•• Underpinning of existing structures
•• Soil and rock anchors
•• Soil nail walls
•• Slope stabilization
•• Deep foundation systems – driven
piles, micropiles, helical piles,
drilled piers
•• Equipment foundations
•• Sheet pile retention and
foundation walls
•• Cofferdams
•• Tunnel access pits and shafts
•• Tunneling and pipe jacking
•• Soil grouting and solidification
•• Caisson structures
•• Structural shoring and
demolition plans
Growth and challenges
Underwood says EPI’s growth has – in
part – been limited to difficulties in
finding quality, pragmatic engineers with
experience in the deep foundations industry,
which is critical to its contractor client
base.
“Being a small company, it’s difficult
to devote the time and resources required
to train entry-level engineers, so bringing
in experienced people is important,” said
Underwood. “The engineering services we
provide tend to involve projects with a
relatively high level of risk. It has been our
