difficult conditions. With ICE®’s knowledge in the size of hammer
required, BBII got Dozier Crane involved in selecting cranes that
would fit in the trestle footprint, yet still handle the loads required.
Then the team contracted STV/Ralph Whitehead to ensure that
the trestle design could handle the loads. This team effort was
extremely successful in safely and efficiently building the job.
Unique application of piles
The Wilmington Bypass is an excellent example of the adaptability
and cost effectiveness of driven pile. Typically, when a bridge is
built in the poor soil conditions of a swamp, the team would utilize
drilled shafts. However, by using larger diameter 30-inch pile, with
voids to keep the weight down, the designers were able to take
advantage of the economic and environmental advantages of pile in
this challenging environment.
Creative solutions
BBII’s use of the leapfrogging trestle layout vastly reduced the
amount of trestle purchased for the project, but it created numerous
other logistical challenges for the team. Reducing the trestle
meant that all of the material for the pile driving, substructure
and girders had to be funneled up the new bridge and then down
to the work trestle. Each pile had to be driven up the new bridge,
unloaded off the delivery truck and loaded on to a separate truck
