“Physically off site from their project/office locations, the
employees can fully focus on the curriculum and each other, and get
the most out of the training experience,” she said.
The Bend educational program curriculum focuses on Balfour
Beatty US’s current business strategy and development initiatives,
its Equal Employment Opportunity policy, safety and ethical/legal
concerns. The team-building exercises challenge employees to work
together to solve problems in constructive ways. In doing so, they
acquire new skills to help in their current roles and in preparation
for future roles with the company.
Because the people who participate in this training meet face
to face, it’s a good opportunity for new employees, particularly
those in management positions, to make connections with individuals
in other departments. In addition, the sessions provide an
instructive overview of the company, its culture and its operations
that helps to orient and successfully onboard new employees.
Nominated by their managers to be included in the training
program, participants benefit from a fun, informative and rewarding
experience.
Skilled, empowered employees make for a strong
company
At the Bend training center, problem solving is an important
focus of the training. Employees are taught and encouraged to
make informed decisions.
“We educate everyone to be leaders in their careers,” said
Barger. “And every leader is empowered to lead the company to
success.”
This empowerment means, for example, that an employee
cleaning a work site is free to say to anyone at any level in the
company, if they’re not following safety procedures, that they
should pay attention to the rules to stay safe. And the employee
will be applauded for doing so.
Any company with informed employees who make good
decisions every day on behalf of the company is likely to succeed.
Balfour Beatty US aims to achieve that by providing ongoing
education and training to build the skills and confidence of its
work force. The success of its efforts is evident, according to
Barger, in the company’s improved safety metrics and profitability,
its reduced overhead costs and its successful delivery of
projects across the country.
The full package of training and education offerings – from
daily safety reminders to on-the-job skills training and the Bend
educational program – are an investment by the company in the
future of its employees, a morale-booster, says Barger, that keeps
people engaged and motivated. That outcome is beneficial to
both the workers and the company. t
The Value of PDCA Membership
Staying abreast of trends, technologies and best practices – information
– is the primary reason for Balfour Beatty US’s membership in PDCA. The
association’s courses, networking events and committees connect the
company with other contractors who work in similar environments
on similar projects, giving it access to insights that help improve
the process of pile driving on its projects. Conversations at any
type of PDCA gathering are a learning – and sharing
– opportunity.
