Things that got done because of COVID-19
While there was a lack of progress on some fronts, the pan-demic
opened up opportunities to work with stakeholder
groups inside and outside the industry.
On March 27, KAP and its member organizations wrote to
Ministers Schuler and Blaine Pedersen asking that agriculture
production, processing, and supporting services be deemed
essential services. We launched the #mbgrow campaign at the
end of April to express our sincere thank you to everyone in
our communities and up and down the supply chain for their
diligent work that keeps farmers operating.
When the federal government locked down the border to
non-essential travel, the good work of the industry and the fed-eral
government meant that temporary foreign workers (TFW)
were able to continue to travel and work in Manitoba, and be
safe in the community. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
estimated that 80 per cent of the TFW we normally have in the
province around now have arrived.
Things that got done despite COVID-19
KAP’s advocacy work has continued with board, board
committee, and policy committee meetings through video
conferencing. We provided submissions on falling number and
moisture testing. We weighed-in on the private rail crossing
issue and the young farmer crop plan credit program. We
released the rural cell service survey results and provided a
submission on the forage insurance review.
The canoe is still pointed down river and we haven’t taken
on any water.
My heartfelt thank you to KAP staff, and to the board
and members who have adapted so well to the new working
conditions. Also, thank you to our network in agriculture and
beyond, including service providers and the public service,
who offered their assistance. FV
