together, like feeding, vaccinating, castrating, and tagging the
cows. That said, Albert still lets Pouteau make his own deci-sions,
and sometimes mistakes as well.
“We actually have differing opinions on many occasions,
like how I should build the fence at the pasture, what breeds I
should use, what system we should use for feeding, and so on,”
said Pouteau. “He provides a lot of the wisdom of what he has
done in the past – what works and what doesn’t – and I think I
provide a lot of the new ideas to make our operation more effi-cient
and less labour intensive.”
For example, Pouteau suggested they transition from
barbed wire to electric fencing, and initiated changes to their
feeding system – reducing feeding intervals from once every
two days to once every five to seven days. These changes have
been major improvements, allowing Pouteau more time for his
off-farm job.
The constant fine-tuning and juggling required to keep
both the farm and off-farm operations going takes a lot of
strength and determination, but Pouteau’s fierce drive for
independence compels him to continue.
“I think my passion revolves around wanting to be my
own boss, make my own decisions and mistakes, and manage
my own business,” he said. “The way I see it, I likely will never
be a king of an empire, but being the owner/manager of a busi-ness
is the next closest thing. It’s kind of like being the king of
your own little empire, isn’t it?” FV
