“We are part of a general contractor, and
we used to drive a lot of piles for all the highrise
buildings in Waikiki, Hawaii. However,
piles are no longer driven in Waikiki; it’s all
augercast or drilled shaft work. In the last
10 years, we installed thousands of ACIP
piles and hundreds of drilled shafts. These
would have been all driven piles 25 years
ago. Currently, we have two small pile jobs
and we had a large pile job for a pier a couple
years ago. I think we average one pile job
every two years now, although we still drive
a lot of sheet piling.”

“The number one change is the equipment
– I have been in the crane business for over
20 years; the biggest change in the pile driving
industry has been the advancement in
crane and pile driving equipment.
Twenty years ago, the primary crane
for driving pile was the friction lattice
boom crawler crane; today you will find
a hydraulic lattice crawler or more likely
a tele-boom crawler crane on a pile driving
job.
Tele-boom crawler cranes are not new
to the crane industry, but they have grown
in popularity over the last few years with
the heavy civil contractors. They are ideally
suited for foundation applications and
are becoming the new go-to machines for
heavy civil/road and bridge construction.
Tadano Mantis Cranes has several
models. They have strong load charts,
which are comparable to similar-sized
lattice boom crawlers. The most popular
models for pile driving are the GTC-1300
(130 US tons), GTC-900 (90 US tons) and
GTC-700 (70 US tons).
Tele-boom crawler cranes are more
maneuverable than a traditional lattice
boom crawler crane and allow the contractor
to maximize productivity in confined
jobsites where space is a premium. Tadano
Mantis approves pile driving applications
on its models, with direct factory support
for all types of foundation equipment. Teleboom
crawler cranes are no longer a niche!”
