Celebrating 25 Years of Progress
By Jason Moore, President, PDCA
It’s hard to imagine all that has changed
in the 25 years since the inception
of the Pile Driving Contractors
Association.
Computers the size of our office have
been replaced by hardware and software
that fits in our pocket and can run thousands
of iterations in seconds to optimize
design. Hard copies of construction documents
have been replaced by laptops, tablets
and phones. Faxes have been replaced
by email.
Information seems to move at the speed
of light.
We are expected to do more with less
at a higher quality without sacrificing
efficiency or margins.
While bid-build projects were our standard
fare in the past, the pile driving contractor
is now often called on to take an
integral role in the design and development
of a successful project. The value of a design
team (internal or external) has never been
more obvious.
While information moves at a pace
exponentially faster than it did in 1995,
the value of relationships and the associations
that provide the atmosphere for
the development of those relationships
has not changed. PDCA is a memberlead
organization formed in 1995 with the
following objectives:
1. Increase the use of driven piles
for deep foundations and earth
retention systems.
2. Promote the use of driven pile solutions
in all cases where they are effective.
3. Promote the preparation, modernization
and improvement of any building
codes that relate to the design and
installation of driven piles.
4. Support educational programs for
engineers and educators on the design
of driven piles for foundations and
earth retention systems.
5. Support educational programs for contractor
members on improving installation
procedures.
6. Encourage and support research that
will improve the reliability, usefulness
and cost effectiveness of driven piles.
7. Give contractors a larger voice in establishing
procedures and standards for
design and installation of driven piles.
PDCA now consists of more than 400
members, 10 standing committees and four
regional chapters meeting multiple times
per year. Each of the committees and chapters
were formed to carry out the objectives
outlined above, and each requires leadership
and input from PDCA’s greatest asset –
its members. Are you actively participating
in your association?
PDCA hosts two annual events, our
Annual Conference and the Design and
Installation of Cost-Efficient Piles (DICEP)
Conference. Both conferences are designed
to create space for connecting industry
professionals and educating owners,
