What (or who) inspired you to serve
on the PDCA Board of Directors?
Skip Gardella (SG): Back in 1995–96, my
company was driving a lot of timber piles,
H-piles and concrete piles, and I had just
purchased the United States’ first Junttan.
It was clear that the pile driving world was
disorganized and that it could benefit from
more organization.
Wayne Waters (WW): For me, it was one
phone call. In 1996, Woody Ford called me
to explain PDCA. He asked me to serve on
the board “just for a year” to help. There
was no way I would tell Woody “no,” and
somehow, I think he knew I would become
involved to the point that I would stay!
Needless to say, I became very involved
along with several others, and it was clear
to us that given the chance, PDCA could
make a difference in promoting the driven
pile over the up-and-coming alternate
foundation methods and that our efforts
would prove worthwhile.
Harry Robbins (HR): My good friend
Wayne Waters invited me to join the PDCA
Board of Directors. Serving on the board
afforded me the opportunity to bring back
ideas to impact our industry on a local level.
Alternatives to driven piles were beginning
to make inroads to the pile driving market
share in South Carolina. Usually, these
alternatives were not better products, but
were chosen by owners and/or designers
because they were better marketed.
Before I was part of PDCA, I was interested
in forming a local association of pile
drivers to pool our resources and protect
our market share. I knew about PDCA and
thought it might be a good idea to explore
affiliating with the national office. I’m
very proud that the first local chapter was
the PDCA of South Carolina Chapter.
Van Hogan (VH): After participating on
PDCA committees, serving on the board
was a natural extension of previous committee
work. I enjoyed the combination of
learning, making new connections and promoting
the industry.
John King (JK): Rory Kelly was a salesperson
at Skyline Steel, and I joined because
of Rory’s enthusiasm toward PDCA. Every
year, Skyline held a golf tournament in
Jacksonville, and I was always a guest of
Richard Gilbert, who was also with Skyline.
