MENTAL HEALTH
Randy Thompson
“We need to get men to speak up. I say
‘men’ because more than 92% of our
workforce is men, and this is part of the
problem – that traditional approach of men
not asking for help. It begins with building
a culture where it’s okay to bring up these
issues without the fear of retribution.”

overdue. The problem was going on way too long and we discarded
a lot of people who had mental health issues rather than
help them.”
Thompson, also a CIASP trustee member, is involved with programs
through LivingWorks Education that train people about suicide
prevention. The program educates and builds skills in people
on how to identify people who may be suicidal, how to approach
them and how to help them get the support they need.
“It’s so important that larger organizations take a stand and help
move the needle,” said Thompson. “The focus on the promotion of
strategic health and wellness programs and other resources for
employers right in the workplace is crucial moving forward.”
There is more work that needs to be done, but real progress is
taking place. Removing stigmas around addressing mental health
in the workplace and the number of programs available to construction
workers today are huge steps in the right direction.
“I’m proud of our industry,” said Krocka. “I’m proud that we are
embracing mental health issues and suicide prevention and are
diligently working together towards getting people the help they
desperately need.” t
