For permanent structures, cellular sheet pile cofferdams are
used mainly in the marine sector to build:
•• Massive bulkheads serving as berths for ships
•• Piers and jetties allowing berthing vessels on both sides
•• Dolphins, typically formed from a single cell to moor ships at
a port
•• Breakwaters providing protection to vessels
It’s much less common to see cells used on land, however they
can be used to form large retaining structures.
Overall, there are mainly two types of cells built with straight
web sheet piles: circular cells and diaphragm cells.
Circular cells: Example of a berth with four circular cells and six connecting arcs
STEEL SHEET PILING
Circular cells Diaphragm cells
The main installation steps for diaphragm cells are similar to
circular cells. The main differences consist in multi-staggering the
sheet piles, the mandatory use of a second template and specific
care with filling operations to ensure stability.
