said Matt Preskitt, project manager at
Morris-Shea.
The location of the filter room excavation
was near the building’s outside wall,
which made the use of tie-back anchors difficult.
The added support of horizontal wales
provided additional bracing for the lagging
assembly. The wale system accommodated
the restrictions created by the existing footings
and provided the needed support within
a limited space.
“Morris-Shea was crucial in expediting
a shoring solution that allowed us to safely
meet the requirements of a very aggressive
schedule for these complex equipment foundations.
Their exceptional personnel met all
expectations from bidding through design,
planning and installation,” said Daniel Taylor,
project manager at Ard Contracting.
Though Morris-Shea’s earth retention
system was designed for temporary
use, it was determined that it could remain
in place and buried with backfill. Ard
Contracting constructed forms within the
shoring and poured concrete walls for
use as foundation for the new casting
furnace, filter room and electrical space.
The Morris-Shea excavations and shoring
wall structures were completed on schedule
in 16 days.
Leading design-build firm Gray
Construction, headquartered in Lexington,
Ky., was selected to lead the expansion at
the Huntingdon, Tenn. aluminum rolling
plant. The project’s geotechnical report was
prepared by Professional Service Industries
of Memphis, Tenn. Birmingham engineering
firm, Tucker-Jones Engineers Associated,
participated in the design of the temporary
earth retention system. Morris-Shea has
worked with each of these construction and
engineering firms on foundation projects
prior to the Gränges Americas Huntingdon,
Tenn. Viking Project.
Morris-Shea has installed foundation
systems for major projects throughout
the United States, the Caribbean and
South America since 1969. The Morris-
Shea team of geotechnical professionals
has constructed foundations under many
of the world’s largest energy, manufacturing
and industrial projects. t
